The story of Bibaji Churi Wala starts in the mid-1800s with a genius craftsman by the name of Bibaji. A native of Jodhpur, Bibaji was attracted to bangle making from a very young age. His passion for colors, glass, and delicate designs soon made him one of the most renowned bangle makers in the area. It did not take long before his humble shop became a destination for the citizens of Jodhpur, as well as royal families from nearby areas. Bibaji’s unique approach to bangle-making combined traditional Rajasthani techniques with his own creativity. While he initially started with glass bangles, he soon expanded his range to include lac (resin) and metal bangles, offering his customers an incredible variety of styles. What set Bibaji apart was not just his skill but his dedication to preserving the time-honoured craft of bangle-making. It's said that Bibaji could identify what bangles would look good on a woman's hand just by looking at them. As demand grew, his reputation spread, and Bibaji Churi Wala became a household name in Jodhpur.

Today, the shop is run by Bibaji’s great-grandchildren, who have continued his legacy with the same commitment to quality and craftsmanship. The current owners, a husband-and-wife duo, reflect the same passion for their family’s art. They often speak of the lessons their grandfather and great-grandfather taught them about the importance of precision, patience, and an eye for detail.

To them, every bangle is a work of history, created with love, care, and reverence for their ancestors' traditions. Entering Bibaji Churi Wala is a time warp experience. The walls feature vintage photographs illustrating the shop's history, and pictures of Bibaji in his younger days laboriously moulding bangles with his own hands. The shop has a stunning marriage of old and new within its interior. The tools and methodology are unchanged but the shop has modern show cabinets now, creating a combination of nostalgia with trendy style.

What makes Bibaji Churi Wala special is the sheer range of bangles on offer, each one a story. The store is renowned for its gorgeous glass bangles, which appear in a palette of colors—a riot of bright reds and greens, blues, and purples. These are frequently hand-painted with ornate designs—floral, geometric, cultural symbols. Each is handcrafted to perfection, so no two bangles are the same, so every customer will leave with a one-off. Lac bangles, another favourite in the shop, are produced using a natural resin that makes them soft and flexible to the touch. These tend to be ornamented with gold leaf, mirror work, or fine carvings, and are ideal for weddings or celebrations.

The store also has Kundan and Meena bangles, exhibiting the royal touch that Jodhpur has been famous for generations. These intricately designed pieces, which usually come studded with precious stones, are as much a work of art as they are a fashion accessory.

Today, Bibaji Churi Wala is not merely a shop—it is a testament to the survival of tradition, the strength of family, and the enduring beauty of Rajasthan's cultural heritage. As long as this tiny shop remains open, the bright bangles it sells will be a lasting testament to Jodhpur's rich artistic heritage and the craftsmen who have devoted their lives to keeping it alive.
