Dior and Armani buy bags at INR 4700 and sell them for INR 2 Lakh plus: Investigation reveals

The Dark Side of Luxury: Exposing Exploitation in High-End Fashion Production

Recent investigations in Italy have unveiled a stark contrast between the glittering world of luxury fashion and the grim realities of its production. A series of raids, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, have exposed widespread exploitation in the manufacturing of high-end handbags and leather goods for iconic brands like Dior and Armani.

According to Milan prosecutors, local factories supplying these luxury brands have been found to use underpaid foreign labor. The investigation revealed that Dior pays suppliers a mere INR 4700 for handbags later retailed at INR 2,34,000, while Armani's bags, initially costing INR 8300, are resold to the brand for INR 22500 and priced around INR 1,62,000 in stores.

Italy, producing 50-55% of global luxury goods output according to Bain & Company, is now under scrutiny for its labor practices. The court has placed companies like Manufactures Dior SRL and Armani under administration, a measure typically reserved for firms infiltrated by organized crime.

Inspections uncovered alarming working conditions, including long hours, unsafe machinery, and substandard living arrangements within workshops. Workers reportedly earned as little as INR 180-240 per hour, far below industry standards.

This scandal has raised serious questions about supply chain oversight and ethical responsibilities in the luxury fashion industry. As brands face increasing pressure for transparency and ethical practices, this exposé may catalyze significant changes in how luxury goods are produced and marketed.
