How Indian TV Serials Shape Cultural Norms

Since the late 70s, Indian TV serials have been a part of the Indian culture. With their increasing cultural relevance in terms of viewer tastes, watching habits, and even social behaviour, they have a major influence over the Indian population. While some serials portray the experiences of common people, others are adapted from novels or books. They cover a wide range of subjects, including tragedy, romance, addressing social issues at large. These serials provide a platform where the values present in Indian society can be showcased, often through its characters. These can be taken positively by some viewers and some may take it negatively. Of course, there are downsides like the “Sasural Simar Ka” or serials like Naagin but they also cater to an audience that thrives on entertainment-logical or not.

Another serial which created a storm in the entertainment industry was “Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi” led by famous actress Mona Singh. It showcased how one should not judge a book by its cover. It encouraged viewers to seek emotional bonding in a partner contrary to just judging them by their looks. There’s more to the human body than just physical appearance.

In addition to these TV soaps, another serial which created a significant impact in the entertainment industry was “Balika Vadhu”. Some people might take it in a negative light but thanks to “Balika Vadhu”, the topic of child marriage came to the forefront.

However, the influence of Indian TV serial is not always positive. Some shows still reinforce negative cultural norms. For example, many serials continue to portray women in traditional and submissive roles like in “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”.

Many serials are family centric and showcase that how a family should stick together even with toxic family members like in “Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai”.TV Serial often deal with sensitive topics in ways that can be problematic. Crime Patrol for example aims to inform public about criminal cases and justice which is to educate people in a positive aspect that justice is always served. However, there have been instances in real life where real life crimes were allegedly inspired by the show.

While we can forever continue to debate whether Indian TV Serials are relevant or not but one thing is certain-These serials have evolved from mere entertainment to a platform for social discourse. Whether viewed critically or appreciated for their impact, Indian TV serials will undoubtedly continue to be an integral part of the nation's collective consciousness for years to come.
