In addition to the unique customs that are observed exclusively at weddings in different states of India, Maharashtrian weddings are a fusion of culture and heritage. From vibrant sarees and delicate jewelry to the traditions ingrained in Maharashtra's rich cultural tapestry, these celebrations stand out.

Among these rites, the "Rukhwat" tradition is particularly distinctive since it uses a display of specific household objects to highlight the bride's abilities and her family's history as part of the marriage celebrations. Although it reinforces the idea of patriarchy in our social structure, this ritual has its own significance in Marathi weddings.
In the traditional Maharashtrian tradition of Rukhwat, the bride's family participates in the wedding celebrations by showcasing a variety of objects. This display had several uses in the past. It demonstrates that the bride is ready to handle the house of her future in-laws. Handmade paintings, embroidered linens, crocheted crafts, and the bride's culinary creations were among the items on display, demonstrating her ability to manage household duties. This display also showcases the status of the bride's family. A radiant and grand display would mean that her family is prosperous and has a good place in society. It shows that the bride had a good upbringing. This Rukhwat display is used to welcome the groom's family, letting them see a glimpse of the bride's abilities and readiness for the marriage. This tradition is often associated with the pride and respect of the bride's family.

Though in modern times the Rukhwat tradition has not lost its essence, it has gone through certain modifications where creativity is infused in the displays. Some families engage in creating personalized displays, whereas some take the help of professionals to create grand displays, ensuring that the Rukhwat is visually stunning. Specific themes are also used to create artistic displays that showcase the bride's interests. Along with the customary household items, certain modern artifacts are also included in the Rukhwat presentation.
Beyond the Rukhwat tradition, other distinct rituals are also practiced in Marathi weddings. One among those is 'Sakhar Puda,' which is an engagement ceremony that makes the marriage official. Along with the usual sarees and jewelry that the bride receives from her future mother-in-law, she also gifts her a packet of sugar that symbolizes the sweet beginning of their new relationship and journey in life. Before other celebrations and rituals, there is another tradition that takes place where five married women are invited to grind turmeric, make papads, and spice pulses to initiate and set a tone for further wedding preparations.

Before the wedding ceremony, 'Gurihar Puja' is done, where the bride worships a silver idol of goddess Parvati that is placed on a mound of rice, seeking blessings for a successful and happy married life. During the marriage, the 'Antarpat' ritual takes place where a silk saree is taken and placed between the groom and the bride to prevent them from seeing each other until some mantras are chanted by the priest.
The bride in Maharashtra wears a Nauvari saree, which is a traditional dhoti-like drape made from different varieties of silk such as Banarasi and Paithani silk fabrics. She is adorned with inherited jewelry. These include Mundavalya, worn by both bride and groom across their foreheads. Nath is another piece of jewelry, a nose ring, signifying marital bliss for the bride. A temple-style necklace, having goddess Lakshmi's motifs, known as Lakshmi Haar or Saaz is also an important piece for the Marathi bride. The groom, on the other hand, is styled with a royal-looking Dhoti Kurta along with Pheta, a turban made of cotton or silk.
The Maharashtrian wedding feast, called 'Sakhar Bhaat,' is served on a banana leaf. The meal contains huge varieties of vegetarian food, which primarily includes Puran Poli, Shrikhand with Puri, Masala Bhaat, Kothimbir Vadi, Modak, etc., and is concluded with a paan that serves as a mouth freshener.
A Maharashtrian wedding is, hence, a perfect blend of age-old traditions along with culturally significant dresses and jewelry. Simple yet soulful Marathi weddings ensure everyone has a memorable celebration.
