The village was once home to the Paliwal Brahmins, a successful community that lived there for about 500 years. They were skilled in farming and managing water in the desert. But in 1825, the entire village, along with 83 nearby villages, was suddenly deserted. The Prime Minister, Salim Singh had set his eyes upon the daughter of the village head and declared he would marry her, with or without her consent. He threatened the villagers with dire consequences and humongous taxes if they did not comply with his wishes. Rather than give in to his demands, the council of the villagers decide to leave their ancestral homes overnight. They decided to protect the honor of their daughter.

Before they left, they supposedly cursed the land so that no one would ever be able to live there again. After that day, no one has ever been able to resettle in Kuldhara , which helps people in believing that it is cursed or haunted. Visitors who explore the ruins often say they feel strange vibes or hear odd noises. Many people have claimed that they have seen supernatural figures and heard footsteps knowing that the village is completely abandoned.

Many experienced investigators have visited the village and reported many unusual things of which there has been no proof. The haunted atmosphere could have easily come from the fact that the village has been abandoned and isolated for so many years now .

Historians offer completely different explanations for why the village was abandoned. They believe it was because of more logical reasons, like imposition of heavy taxes, lack of water, and difficult living conditions due to the isolated location of the village. These issues could’ve also forced the villagers to leave slowly over time rather than all of them fleeing together. They believe that these haunted stories may have been formed later, as the village remained empty for a very long time , making it a perfect place for ghost tales to brew.

Whether Kuldhara is truly haunted depends on what you believe. Some people are convinced by the curse and ghost stories, while others think it’s just an abandoned village that was left because of hardships. There’s no clear proof of paranormal activity, but the village’s mysterious past and eerie setting keep people fascinated, and it continues to draw visitors curious about the "ghost village" of Kuldhara.
