While researching on artworks in India’s cultural landscape, we stumbled upon the enchantingly intricate Aipan artwork and felt compelled to learn more about it. This curiosity eventually paved the way for us to discover The Kumaon, a luxury retreat nestled amidst the majestic peaks of Almora, in Uttarakhand.
The Kumaon exemplifies a blend of understated sophistication, within the backdrop of nature’s beauty: the Nanda Devi Range. The property consists of 10 suites divided among five buildings, with connected balconies offering stunning vistas of the majestic Great Himalayan range. The central structure features a lounge area, a spa, a well-stocked library featuring some of the prized books and a unique dining space that extends out over the valley for an exceptional dining affair.
The start of our trip was so welcoming, with an airport pickup that showed how considerate the staff were, by preparing a brunch for our long 5-hour journey since they knew we'd be exhausted from traveling all day long. When we got to our destination, we had some time to unwind and get used to the environment.
While evening drew near, a surprise, from Abhinav and his team awaited – an arranged dinner beneath the starlit sky with the grand Himalayan range as our scenic backdrop was unveiled to us all with wonderment and joy in our hearts. The quaint room exuded a charm providing sweeping views of the mountains that encapsulated the resorts dedication to living in harmony with nature. Every detail at The Kumaon showcases a rooted eco consciousness; from their ban on plastics to their utilization of locally sourced sustainable materials, for construction purposes.
The next day was filled with excitement as we embarked on a journey, to Kasar Devi—a place known for spirituality and meditation. This ridge has attracted personalities such as Steve Jobs, Tim Cook and many other notable figures in search of awakening and provided us with a deep sense of connection to the surroundings. After our adventurous outing was a spa experience at the resort—a way to unwind, after our physical activities.
Our journey, into the Uttarakhandi culture deepened as we took a stroll through a village in Almora to discover its heritage. We admired the traditional Kumaoni jewellery and clothing adorned by residents and were captivated by the colorful lively houses scattered across the scenery. Our exploration concluded with an Aipani art experience that offered us a glimpse, into this traditional art form that had captured our attention from the start.
The dining experience, at The Kumaon is truly exceptional and worth highlighting. The resorts commitment to using sourced ingredients leads to a menu that beautifully combines Kumaoni dishes with contemporary culinary practices. Enjoy every meal, as a crafted exploration of tastes that celebrate simplicity and true flavors.
The essence of The Kumaon truly shines through its rooms and unforgettable experiences; however, it is the warmth and hospitality of Abhinav and his team that truly sets this place apart. Their commitment, to celebrating the culture of Almora is truly praiseworthy as they manage to make this secluded area more approachable while still maintaining its charm. Not to forget the dogs, at the resort who warmly welcome guests with affection adding to the cozy and inviting ambiance.
The Kumaon isn't just a hotel- It's a doorway, to the essence of the Uttarakhand state in India’s north region. By mixing top notch luxury with adventures, it presents tourists with a special chance to bond with nature, culture and their inner selves.
