The South Indian Film industry which was once mocked for showing exaggerated and illogical fight scenes and cheap comedy scenes has undergone a huge transformation and is now gaining national as well as international recognition. Be it be the winning of Oscar by Tamil documentary ‘Elephant whisperers’ or winning of award by ‘Vel Maraangal’ at Sanghai International Film Festival, regional south India cinema is gaining huge popularity.
But how did this change happen that movies which were earlier not appreciated at even PAN India level are now achieving new milestones at a global level ?

South Indian Cinema is experiencing an unprecedented global rise, overtaking Bollywood in both popularity and box office collections. With the success of films like, ‘Pushpa 2’, ‘KGF’, ’RRR’ and ‘Lucky Bhaskar’, this industry has established its mettle not just in India, but in the whole world.
South Indian Entertainment Industry includes four regional cinema branches, which are, Tollywood industry which makes movies in Telugu language and is based in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana; Kollywood which makes movies in Tamil language and is based in Tamil nadu; Mollywood which includes Kerala based Malyalam Film industry and the last one in Kannada film industry which has produced PAN India hit movies like Kantara, KGF and 777 Charlie.

With the Tamil documentary ‘Elephant Whisperers’ and the song ‘Natu Natu’ from the famous movie RRR winning Oscars at the global level, South Indian Industry achieved tremendous success and people from all over the world have started praising it.
Even at the national level, these movies have performed exceptionally well at the 70th National Film Award and won 20 medals.
This rise can be explained as a result of various factors. With the availability of these movies in multiple languages and the increase in OTT platforms, these movies and documentaries can now be accessed by a larger portion of the audience.

Apart from this, the unique and engaging storyline of the movies attract more and more people. In recent times, these movies are often made in different genres and themes that have appealed to a wide audience. South films that have major popularity have often expressed cultural authenticity and helps the audience in relating to the plot of the movie.
Along with this, the great VFX effects and exceptionally good direction has made a positive impact in the mind of the audience.
The 70th National Film Awards cemented South Indian cinema's dominance, with Malayalam films leading the charge. The Malayalam film ‘Aattam’ won the coveted Best Feature Film award, and other South Indian movies garnered accolades in categories like Best Child Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing.

For his outstanding performance in ‘Kantara’, Kannada actor Rishab Shetty was honored with the Best Actor Award at the 70th National Film Awards In total, 20 South Indian films won awards across various categories, compared to only six awards for Hindi films. This sweeping victory shows the quality and impact of South Indian cinema, which has not only captivated Indian audiences but also impressed international viewers and critics.
South Indian superstars like Allu Arjun, Prabhas, Mahesh Babu and Vijay Thalapathy have huge global fan base due to their exceptionally good acting skills.
Global as well as Indian audiences are appreciating these new regional cinema due to their emotionally connecting storyline. Famous Hollywood directors are also seen praising the work of South Indian Film industry.
Regional cinema’s rise has also highlighted the wealth of talent outside Bollywood. Gone are the days when Bollywood would import actresses from South Cinema. Today more and more names from Bollywood like Kiara Advani, Emraan Hashmi, Saif Ali Khan, Bobby Deol, Janhvi Kapoor, are making their way to south films while stars like Prabhas, Yash, Prashanth Neel and SS Rajamouli have created a major fan following in the North.
Also actors from South are now being given equal footage in Hindi films, like Jr. NTR is making his grand Hindi debut with War 2 opposite Hrithik Roshan. Nani in an interview also shared that he would love to collaborate with names like Rajkumar Hirani and Imtiaz Ali.
In the near future, it is expected that this industry will grow more and will achieve new milestones, surpassing Bollywood.
