Heading to Kashmir? Is it Safe to Travel?

When one thinks of Kashmir, an image of Bollywood comes to our mind: scenic views, snowy mountains and lush green fields. Yet beneath this beauty lies a history of conflict. That very feeling of peace gets replaced by fright for several obvious reasons. The paradise is not all rainbows and sunshine, it has seen the worst of humanity, constant war, terrorist attacks and threats to locals. Quoting a Zayn Malik song’s lyric “It's a paradise & it’s a warzone” is the perfect way to describe Kashmir.

My trip last August to this beautiful state is still very close to my heart. It is true when people say: “You can leave Kashmir physically, but Kashmir can never leave your heart”. It took me a while to come back and reset in the hustle bustle of Delhi, all I could think about was Kashmir’s greenery, cold air, the smell of Kahwa and the constant smile of the locals that would make my day better.

As I landed in Srinagar, I could see clear blue skies and feel the blaring wind, but what came next was extensive security checks. There were military forces wherever the eyes could reach, each luggage bag went through proper checking. This was important but also created a tense situation.

The locals were very helpful contrary to the misconception of how the local Kashmiris take advantage of tourists by charging them extra for cabs and other activities. I felt they were the sweetest people and had a great welcoming aura which made the place feel so special to be in. Srinagar is still a developing city and the cleanliness was quite amazing. Gulmarg and Pahalgam on the other hand were just, HEAVENLY. It made me forget that I ever felt scared to be in Kashmir. That is the reason it is said: In the world if there is Jannat (heaven), it is here, it is here!

By the time my trip came to an end, I realized why the numerous security check posts and military forces were everywhere, it was to keep me and other people safe. It changed my opinion on Kashmir forever. It is true that the place has seen war but our military forces, brave soldiers of India make Kashmir a safe space and a place where every tourist feels safe.

I think as Indians, we should visit such places that have gone through tough days. The support Kashmir will get through tourism will help it grow, improve and develop. Our country has the most beautiful places and Kashmir makes it to the top of the list.

An appropriate conclusion to answer "Is Kashmir Safe to Travel? "is "YES". The credit to making Kashmir safe is our brave BSF soldiers and the people of Kashmir who’ve suffered great pain yet have the biggest smiles on their faces.
